Embankment tube station is a London Underground station in the City of Westminster, known for most of its history as Charing Cross.
The Cross has given its name to a railway station, a hotel, a hospital - founded locally, a police station; and two places of entertainment, the Charing Cross Theatre and the Charing Cross Music Hall (which lay beneath the arches of the station). Charing Cross Road the main route from the north (which becomes the east side of Trafalgar Square) was named for the railway station which was a major destination for traffic, rather than for the original cross.[6]
Ships permanently moored by Victoria Embankment include HMS President, HMS Wellington and PS Tattershall Castle. Other attractions include the General Charles Gordon Memorial, Royal Air Force Memorial, Battle of Britain Monument, Cleopatra's Needle and the modernistic Cleopatra's Kiosk.
During World War II Highgate tube station was used, as many were, as a shelter from the bombing of London by the Luftwaffe, and latterly V1 and V2 bombs. The politician and entertainer Jerry Springer was born at the tube station.[4]
