The station was opened on 14 February 1904 by the Great Northern & City Railway (GN&CR) on its underground route between the Great Northern Railway (GNR) station at Finsbury Park and the Metropolitan Railway (MR) and City & South London Railway (C&SLR) station at Moorgate in the City of London.
City Road on the London Underground is a disused tube station. It was one of the stations built when the City & South London Railway (C&SLR) (now part of the Northern Line) opened its extension from Moorgate to Angel on 17 November 1901. It is located between Old Street and Angel.
In 2006 the Charity Commission censured the Tate for breaking charity (but not criminal) law over the purchase.[6]
