Packing Advice:

• Purchase packaging supplies well in advance before your move. See Packaging

• Clearly label all boxes stating the destination room, contents, and any fragile items.
• Set aside a few spare boxes for the day of the move for any loose bits and pieces.
• Dispose of any rubbish a few days before your moving day.
• Decide what you want to take with you and what will be left behind.
• Try and clean your property before your moving day.
• Start packing non-essential items as early as possible.

Find out if your Moving Company will Move Your Plants
Plants are fragile creatures and it is important to maintain special handling and care to prevent any damage during transportation. They need air, comfortable temperatures, and water. For this reason, insurance does not cover any loss or damage to your plants during your move and some moving companies might not accept the transportation of plants for journeys over 150 miles. Contact your moving company a couple weeks in advance before your move to find out if they can take your plants, or if you will need to make alternative arrangements.
If moving State to State, find out if plants can cross state borders
Some agricultural states have strict rules about bringing plants into their state. Florida and California grow valuable cash crops which they are very protective of. There can be concerns over bugs or disease which may be on any type of plant you bring in. They can even ask if you have any fruit in the car before they permit you to drive across their boarder.
If you are moving from one state to another, we recommend finding out if your plants will be permitted across their boarder, before you prepare and pack them up. Call your local Department of Agriculture to check the current regulations.
In general, most states require plants being transported across their boarder to be grown indoors in sterilized potting soil, and not soil taken from outside. It is advisable to transplant any plants you might have already planted in containers using outdoor soil, into new containers with sterilised potting soil. You can buy this at most local nurseries or garden centres and it is wise to do this in advance before you attempt to move them across state borders.
Transplant Plants in clay pots to Unbreakable plastic Containers
Ceramic pots full of dirt and plants can be heavy and awkward to move and are easily breakable. To protect both the plant and any expensive pots, transplant the plants into plastic containers big enough for the size of the plant and their roots, two or three weeks before your moving day.
 
Transplanting is a shocking experience for plants, and moving day can be tough on them too. It is wise to transplant them plenty of time in advance to allow them time to recuperate and be strong enough for moving day.
 
Transplanting your plants into clean plastic pots and sterilized potting soil also provides an opportunity for you to look them over and check for any pest infected areas. This will give you enough time to treat the problem before you move.
